Witches in the Philippines: Myth, Fact, Or Fiction

Most of the people in the Philippines believed that witches exist, but those witches that major Filipino believes never cast any Spells, and never believes or don’t know anything about Five Elements or something, or cooking a stone with lot’s of fish scales as an ingredients to convert stone to gold they also don’t believe on that, and don’t know anything about Pagan Wiccan Religion since majority of the Filipino are Roman Catholic in faith religion.

Even some of the Filipino Professionals in life also believe in Aswang or Witches.

    Aswang
A default type of Filipino style witches, they have an ability to transform themselves from a black big hungry red eyed dog to a frightening human man-eater with fangs and claws, or transform back again to a desired black animal. The Aswang is a flesh-eating, shapeshifting monster. During the day, Aswangs appear as regular townspeople, though they may be observed by others to have reclusive habits or magical abilities. At night, Aswangs shift into eerie predatory forms and go hunting for human prey, preferring to feast on children and pregnant women above all else. The myth of the aswang is popular in the Western Visayan regions such as Capiz, Iloilo and Antique.

    Mangkukulam
The Mangkukulam is the Filipino term for a witch or sorcerer, literally meaning "a practitioner of kulam". Other terms are the Spanish brujo and bruja (masculine and feminine forms of "witch"; Filipinized as bruho and bruha). The verb kulamin (/koo-LAH-min/) means "to bless or hex", while a curse is called sumpa, which may also take the meaning of "vow" or "oath". The Mangkukulam use a voodo doll and a needle to cast spells on people they want to revenge on.

    Manananggal
The Manananggal is a type of flying witches, the lower body separates to the upper body, as the lower body from toes to navel leave standing on the ground while from navel up to the head flies of the sky with long outstretched bat-like wings.

    Wak-Wak or Tik-Tik
The Wakwak is a vampiric, bird-like creature in Philippine mythology. mostly heard by a husband when a wife is pregnant often heard that sound outside and the Wak-Wak or Tik-Tik sound roaming around the nipa bamboo provincial house.

    Kubot
Kubot is a bat-like creature that resembles an umbrella with its huge, wide wings. It catches its victim by its claws and takes it home to be butchered.

    Sigbin
Sigbin is a kangaroo-like creature which has a wide mouth with large fangs. Some say that this is another form of the aswang, while there are other claims which identify it as the companion of the tik-tik. It kills people with its deadly sneeze.

    Balbal
Balbal is a kind of witch that preys on pregnant women. When the balbal is hungry, its eyes turn reddish, become sharp, penetrating the woman’s womb. The Bal-Bal is believed to be a creature that consumes the dead and then leaves behind banana trunks in the grave for the exchange

All of the types of Filipino Witches never casting a spell, they don’t know anything about that. They never wear a black long hat with pictures of moon and a star too, they never hold any long broomstick or never use broomstick assistance just to fly, never and no such 5 elements to believe on.

The “Aswangs” are said to be ‘cursed’ creatures and carries on the curse of Lilith. Some say their condition is a sickness and is a mutation of dystonia parkinsonism. There are characteristics that make this condition very similar to the signs of an “aswang”. These days, the people of Capiz try to make fun of their town; to try and attract tourists made a festival called “Aswang Festival” that debuted in October 2004; as a sort of a “halloween-like” celebration. This festival has gotten mixed reactions from people in the region, most notably the arch-diocese, as it seems to be a celebration of evil.

Aswang and Mananaggal, as well as Tik-Tik or even Wak-Wak love to attack pregnant mothers (but not a Bagat) as they know that a baby inside womb is tastier and can’t control themselves but attack while there is an available time, mostly at night where full moon.

The only reason for an aswang to keep on passing their genes to a newly recruit aswang is the bertud (a color white mentos-like candy type) from the mouth of the host to transfer to the mouth of its downline, preferably their daughter to carry the legacy of the Pinoy style witches.

    How to deal with Aswangs?
Buntot-pagi (Stingray’s Tail) is considered an effective repellant, and some families keep them on-hand to fight Aswangs. It is use like a whip and lashes on Aswangs doing more hurtful damage to them.
